The spirited town of Rough and Ready is just four miles west of Grass Valley and real estate here provides for ideal country living. At 1885 ft elevation, Rough and Ready’s climate is mild: summer temperatures here average in the upper 80s and the winter months average in the 40s. Residents here enjoy living above the fog, and below the snow. Large parcels and family homes abound in this area with plenty of sun light, and rich soil. Boasting a very unique history, Rough and Ready is the only mining town to have “seceded” from the Union in 1850 (as a result of townspeople, disgruntled at the government with its taxes and absence of law and order). The Great Republic of Rough and Ready was then established, but only briefly; three months later, the town rejoined the Union, partially as a result of nearby towns Grass Valley/Nevada City refusing to sell liquor to the “foreigners” of Rough and Ready. Those lucky enough to own real estate in the historic town of Rough and Ready enjoy rural life, and being part of a distinctive and proud community.
